Some components within the cooling system can be upgraded to avoid potential problems. On the MGF/TF, for example, there are two mild steel coolant pipes fitted underneath the car that can corrode and leak, but for around £70 they can be changed for stainless steel items that are less prone to corrosion.

A coolant level sensor kit is available, which helps to avoid the damage that can arise when an engine runs low on coolant. This includes a new expansion tank with a sensor built in, plus an audible alarm and light to alert the driver if the level inside drops below the minimum marker. Unlike an oil pressure warning light, which usually tells you that your engine is toast shortly before the banging starts, the coolant level sensor should give you enough time to avert disaster rather than just figuring out how to pay for it.
